After being on hiatus since 2011, RX Bandits finally reunited just in time to wash out the taste left by Magic’s
Police cover song Police tribute song completely original song “Rude”. If you want something with a little bit of a reggae flavor, you can do a lot worse than RX Bandits. Taking some surprising twists and turns throughout their career, the upbeat progressive-ska rock band has continued to defy expectations, even after taking a three year hiatus.
The band’s comeback album Gemini, Her Majesty was only released on July 22nd but it already feels right at home alongside The Resignation and …And The Battle Begun. Vocalist/guitarist Matt Embree sounds as on point as ever, drifting over riffs from Steve Choi that range from bouncy ska to darkly atmospheric.
It’s as if they never left.
The one song that never leaves my head is the bizarrely titled “Meow! Meow! Space Tiger”. Perhaps it was a demo name, a placeholder that they decided the stick with…it doesn’t matter. The song has kick. Choi and Embry again unity to create some funky sounds just before pouring into an insanely infectious, upbeat reggae hook. It has the perfect balance of old-school ska RX and their newer, spacier sounds. Gemini, Her Majesty deserves love and recognition as a full, cohesive album but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that this song wasn’t my ticket to take that ride.
