Banjo-Kazooie Spiritual Sequel Confirmed; First Details Revealed

After months and months of teasing through mysterious Twitter account MingyJongo, it looks like we’re finally going to get our first look at the spiritual sequel to Banjo-Kazooie on Thursday.

Former RARE-employee and game composer Grant Kirkhope is responsible for lending his music making talents to the golden age of the Nintendo 64, creating music for Goldeneye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Perfect Dark,  Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Killer Instinct Gold and Donkey Kong 64.  Kirkhope left RARE about five years after Microsoft took over, shortly after lending his work to the Banjo spin-off Nuts & Bolts and the Viva Pinata series.

Recently Kirkhope has been teasing Banjo-Kazooie fans about a new project.  The very same project that MingyJongo has been seemingly promoting through a unique brand of Twitter-based viral marketing.

Playtonics, a new game developer comprised of former RARE employees, makes no bones about who they are.  Take a look at their suspicious-looking logo and hilarious motto about a “rare breed of games” on their official website.  Cute.  They also describe their team in a little bit more detail:

Ahem. Currently we’re a sextet of artists, programmers and designers – sort of like The Pussycat Dolls with computer science degress – with one thing in common; we were all once core member of famous UK studio Rare, where we helmed franchises such as Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country and Viva Piñata.

We’ve got the bloke who programmed Donkey Kong Country, the character designer behind Banjo and Kazooie, and the artist who made your console fit to burst with lavish environments across a decade’s worth of adventure games.

Playtonics isn’t revealing any major details until the new issue of EDGE Magazine hits on Thursday, but we do know a few tidbits for the time being. The game is said to be a 3-D platformer akin to Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, featuring a completely new set of protagonists (that appear to be a bird and a dinosaur? Maybe?).  The game will receive early access treatment through Steam.  Other consoles are not announced, though the development team at Playtonic games explicitly express their wish to work with Nintendo once again.

There’s a history of working with Nintendo so we’d naturally love to see our game on a Nintendo platform. If people tell us to make Wii U our target console platform then we’ve got the flexibility to do that.

In the meantime, I’ll leave you with the teaser image left by Playtonics on their website.  Do you see the dinosaur and bird or have I completely lost all my jinjos?

Full details will be revealed in EDGE Magazine on Thursday, February 12th.
Keep checking Playtonic’s official website and twitter account for more details.

It’s Official: Spider-man is joining the Marvel Cinemaverse

UPDATE: It’s Confirmed!!

Original post:

According to Latino Review[RUMOR] , SONY is allowing Spider-man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. People often suggest taking Latino Review’s reports with a grain of salt but they’ve had a decent track record with respect to the MCU, accurately reporting on much of Phase 3.

With this recent report, it looks like Spidey will be making his grand appearance in the third Avengers film, currently being split into Infinity War Part I and Infinity War Part II. The story line will see some pretty bleak changes for the Avengers. Keep in mind that this movie will follow Captain America: Civil War and be warned, these are spoilers:

[mks_highlight color=”#000000″]
Thor is missing in action, imprisoned somehwere. Steve Rogers is dead. Chris Evans will not be in this movie. It makes sense when you see that Evans is only signed on for two more movies, and would leave room for Bucky to take up the sheild just as he did in the comics. Anyway, this prompts Spider-man to swing into action and join the fight.[/mks_highlight]

Again, it still might not be true but if it is, this is pretty exciting stuff.

Kendrick Lamar Does Not “Love Himself” On New Single “Blacker The Berry”

If anyone can get people to stop gushing over Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco, it’s this guy.

Yes, Kendrick Lamar has finally released his 2nd single to promote his insanely anticipated follow up to Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City.

“You hate me don’t you?”
“You sabotaged my community, making a killing/you made me a killer”
“I’m the biggest hypocrite of 2015”

Certainly a far cry from his ode to self-love “i”, isn’t it?  Kendrick sounds shot out of a cannon, fired up and furious but who is he mad at?  He seems to takes shots at the record industry, hip-hop, government and the community he grew up in but his true target is revealed toward the end of the song -Kendrick is mostly taking shots at himself.  Wait for that last line and try to decipher what it means.  He just called himself a “hypocrite” for crying for Trayvon Martin when “gang bangin'” caused him to “kill a n**** blacker than me”.

That can’t be literal can it?  Earlier in the song Kendrick warns of a confession but did he really just admit to murder?

Listen for yourself:

Even RapGenius is losing their minds over that last line.

SEGA SEQUEL: New Toejam & Earl Game In The Works

This one definitely slipped under my radar.
According to the official Facebook page, a brand-new Toejam and Earl game is currently in production.

Just a week ago, the Toejam and Earl Facebook page posted this message:

Greetings from Funkotron! We haven’t been posting as often lately because we’ve gotten really busy with the new TJ&E game. We will be making some announcements in a probably 3 or 4 weeks, when we have something we can show, and will be able to share lots of information with you.

Little else has been said since the posting but included with the statement were a handful of drawings (below) that appear to be early concept art for the purported sequel. This game will actually mark the fourth Toejam and Earl outing since their first adventure on the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive in 1991 (5th if you count Ready, Aim, Tomatoes).  Designed by Greg Johnson, the first title was a well-received co-op dungeon crawler starring two alien rappers trying to make their way back home.  The game spawned two full-fledged sequels- 2D platformer Panic On Funkotron and the lesser known XBox exclusive Toejam and Earl III: Mission to Earth.

While we wait for an announcement and pray that it’s not a crappy F2P mobile endless runner, take a look at this concept art.

Here’s What Game Of Thrones’ Maisie Williams Said On Reddit!

Maisie Williams at HBO's "Game Of Thrones" Season 3 Seattle Prem

Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, known for playing the vengeful Arya Stark, just wrapped up a Reddit AMA only moments ago.  She was funny and very forthcoming with her answers.  Here some of what she had to say:

On making up lyrics to a song she hasn’t memorized

All the time. I thought Taylor Swift’s new song said “Something-something-Starbucks-lovers” when it actually said “I’ve got a long list of ex-lovers” and that was news to me. And I realized I’d been embarrassing myself for like 2 months!

On video games

Me and my brothers enjoy playing a computer game called “Amnesia” which is really scary!

On difficult scenes to film for Game Of Thrones

There’s actually a scene in the coming season… which was my most difficult scene to film. And I think fans are going to be really excited about it. More emotional than we’ve seen Arya in previous seasons.

On the moment she realized the popularity of Game Of Thrones

Season 3. At the season 3 premiere, we went to the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, and stepping out of the car, with hundreds of people screaming my name, is when I realized that this show completely changed my life. It was very, very daunting – I found it quite scary – but it happened gradually, so I had time to get used to it.

On the things that annoy her

Patronizing adults, saying “back in my day, blahblahblah” because I’m sure they found it annoying in their day when adults said back in MY day – I don’t know what it was like in your day, I was only born 17 years ago, so stop being patronizing about it!

On which actor’s personality most resembles their GoT character

Rory (McCann) is quite similar to The Hound before breakfast, in that, if he hasn’t eaten, he’s kind of grumpy! haha! But I love ‘im regardless.

On what she would do if she took the iron throne

Ehm… oooh, if I was the queen of Westeros, the first rule… I would make everyone a Wildling, because I think their costumes are really cool!

It’s probably the most shallow answer ever, but it’s true.

On her favorite guilty pleasure movie

Oh! JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE. It’s like, about 3 girls that fancy this one guy, and it’s so cheesy, but I can’t stop watching it, ever.

On dancing, and her favorite type of dance

I like jazz, because it doesn’t matter what shape or size or length your legs are, you can use this dance to benefit you. Yeah. It’s good for all shapes and sizes, I guess.  You can modify it to benefit your body type.

Ernie Hudson Remembers His “Devastating” Experience With Ghostbusters

Everyone remembers Dan Akroyd’s Ray, Bill Murray’s Peter Venkmann and the late, great Harold Ramis’s role as Egon from the Ghostbusters movies.  Winston, portrayed by actor Ernie Hudson, is seldom mentioned.  He didn’t appear in the posters.  His name is often missing from available Halloween costumes.  He didn’t even appear in the original trailer for the movie.  So what happened?

Hudson remembers the experience of filming the first Ghostbusters movie for Columbia Pictures in a short, heartfelt essay he penned for Entertainment Weekly late last year.  The actor explains that when he first read the script, Winston “came in right at the very beginning of the movie and had an elaborate background: he was an Air Force major something, a demolitions guy.”  Hudson fell in love with the character and after a long audition process made the “awful mistake” of letting the studio know that he “really, really wanted it”.  Columbia offered Ernie Hudson only half of his original quote, promising him it was the role of a lifetime that would “make his career”.

Hudson agreed to the quote. He believed them.

Then, the night before filming, he was passed a new draft of the script:

The character was gone. Instead of coming in at the very beginning of the movie, like page 8, the character came in on page 68 after the Ghostbusters were established. His elaborate background was all gone, replaced by me walking in and saying, “If there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe anything you say.” So that was pretty devastating.

Hudson had heard that the role was originally written for Eddie Murphy and thought that might be the reason for the sudden changes.  Director Ivan Reitman refutes this rumor however, stating that this was never the case.  He had also heard that Columbia, in response to Bill Murray’s new found star power, reduced Winston’s character in order to give Venkman more lines.

In any case, Ernie Hudson said that he bears no animosity toward Murray, Akroyd or Reitman, expressing gratidue for his positive experience working on both films.  Hudson explains his hurt feelings in greater detail in the Entertainment Weekly piece.  Give it a read.

Hudson also recently changed his position on the recent announcement of the all-female Ghostbusters sequel/reboot.  After initially expressing concern that fans didn’t want to see an “all-female” Ghostbusters movie if that meant he, Akroyd and Murray wouldn’t be in it back in October, tweeted the statement below:

The Ghostbusters reboot has been set for release on July 16th, 2016.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U update adds 15 8-Player Stages

Owners of Super Smash Bros. Wii U will get a nice surprise this morning in the form of a new update.  The update is roughly 316 MB in size, fixes several bugs and glitches and one other thing- it updates 15 stages for use in 8-player mode.  Previously 8-player mode only offered a handful of stage options.  This time around, several previously unselectable stages are now made larger and friendlier for larger groups to fight it out.  That’s not all, there are now also Final Destination versions of stages available for a larger group of players as well.  For example, if you like Kirby’s Great Cave Offensive but your 7 other friends don’t want to deal with a maze of lava-related deaths, there is now a flat-plane single platform version available as well.

Take a look at the list below:

New details, gameplay trailers for Pokémon fighter “Pokkén Tournament”

Announced in 2014 Pokkén Tournament is an arcade-fighter being developed by the team behind the Tekken and Soul Calibur games.  Initially we were only given brief footage of Lucario fighting Machamp but this morning we’ve been treated to new footage, a trailer and a wealth of brand-new gameplay details.

It would appear that Pokken Tournament is not just a straight-up Tekken style fighter but rather a more complex and Pokemon-inspired than previously thought. Your character, a Pokemon trainer, first selects a Pokemon based on the grading of your preference.  Pokemon fighters are categorized into three different grades: Field offense, Duel offense and Resonance Burst. When the game begins the two Pokemon are placed on opposite ends of a large 3D field.  In this mode, your character can fire off special attacks, jump, run and dodge in full 3D.  When the two characters get close enough, the game leaves it’s “field mode” and enters into “duel mode”.  In duel mode the camera becomes fixed and the game will feel more closely related to Tekken in terms of combat-style.  Your characters also have a Resonance Burst, a character-specific move similar to an “ultra” from the Street Fighter series or a “final smash” from Smash Bros.

When selecting your Pokemon before each mach, you also have the option of selecting a Pokemon partner to assist you in the match.  These support characters can be summoned during combat and provide a variety of moves to defend you or damage the other character. Buttons during gameplay are for “Light Attack”, “Heavy Attack”, “Guard”, “Throw”, “Support” and a button simply referred to as “Pokemon” (which likely employs unique special abilities).

Thus far the game is only confirmed for arcade release but I strongly expect a Wii U port will be announced shortly after.

Take a look at some gameplay videos:

Game of Thrones star cast for X-Men: Age of Apocalypse

There’s been some buzz that director Bryan Singer was eyeing a certain Game of Thrones actress for the role of Jean Grey in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past sequel tentatively titled X-Men: Age of Apocalypse.  Tonight it was finally confirmed. Sansa Stark herself, actress Sophie Turner, will portray the mutant that would go on to become the legendary Phoenix in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming Marvel Comics adaptation.

Joining Turner is Tye Sheridan (Tree Of Life) as Scott Summers aka Cyclops and Nickelodeon child actor Alexandra Shipp as Storm.  The young actors will be taking over for Famke Janssen, James Marsden and Halle Berry as the younger counterparts of their big-screen counterparts.

Age of Apocalypse will also star Oscar Isaac as titular villain who disrupts the timeline, initiates a war on mankind, commits genocide on the human race and selectively kills all mutants with psychic abilities.  At his side are the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”, Death, Famine, Pestilence and War.  In the comics, video games and animated series, Apocalypse brainwashes several of the X-Men to become these henchmen and take up his cause.

Details of the movie are still scarce but the entire “class” from X-Men: First Class is expected to return in addition to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan will not return.

X-Men: Age of Apocalypse is slated for May 17th, 2016.
