‘The Punisher’ spin-off series coming to Netflix

It’s official!

The Punisher, last seen in Season 2 of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix, is getting his own series.  Portrayed by ‘Walking Dead’ alum Jon Bernthal, Frank Castle (Punisher) forces Daredevil to question how far his willing to go in his crusade for justice in Hell’s Kitchen.

Unlike so many of his Marvel brethren, The Punisher has no qualms with using brutal, torturous and often lethal force, to get his message across.  When he’s not protecting the city, he’s usually on his own personal quest for vengeance after his wife and two children were gunned down by criminals in broad daylight.   The Punisher has been portrayed three times in movie theaters.  Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson have all taken on the skull-adorned serial avenger with little to no success.

After the tremendous positive reception Bernthal’s portrayal of Marvel’s bloodiest hero (sorry Deadpool) has received, it’s no surprise that Netflix has finally signed on the dotted line.

Pete’s Dragon Remake Reveals It’s Elliott

Only one short month after Disney unleashed the first teaser-trailer for their remake of the 70’s cult-classic Pete’s Dragon (watch it here), they finally reveal the new design for the lovable Elliot.

This was his original design, taken from a classic scene that really made me want to try a scorched apple when I was a kid…

And thanks to EntertainmentWeekly, we now know what he looks like in 2016:

A little fuzzier than he once was but it definitely gives him a friendlier, cuddly appearance- somewhat evoking the innocent vibe that the original pink-haired, cel-shaded design gave.  The face, while adding cat-like eyes and mouth, retains the larger jaw of his goofy predecessor.

I’m looking forward to seeing how he looks in motion!

Batman v. Superman : Review

I was ready to love Batman v. Superman.

I was ready to be “that guy” that defends it against the towering waves of vitriol and hatred. I wanted to be soapbox geek who explained the film’s inherent worth the way I do as an impassioned anime fan or someone who thinks that Ghostbusters 2 is a good movie. I wanted to be the bleeding heart fanboy pumping his fist against the masses.

Batman v. Superman wouldn’t let me.

The opening sequence is a pulse-quickening retelling of Man of Steel’s ending (another movie I defended despite it’s flaws) through the eyes of Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne. The scene works, we see Bruce Wayne as a man in fear of dissolution and death as he runs through the smoke of crumbling buildings, desperately searching for any survivors trapped in the building that bears his namesake. Holding a newly orphaned crying child in his arms his looks up to see the source of desolation to see a blurry red-caped figure flung through sky scrapers like a finger running through faucet water. It’s a powerful opening and gives us enough reason to believe that Bruce, or Batman, might begin to distrust and even fear Superman.

Unfortunately the momentum is immediately lost.

We’re whisked away from the panic into a muddled, pseudo-political conspiracy thread in a desert war-zone. Lois goes from interviewing a terrorist to being attacked, then attacked again, then quickly saved by Superman. The scene ends almost immediately after Superman pummels a terrorist into paste.  Nothing beyond his brief rescue mission is depicted and yet, for some puzzling reason, this is the moment that the Synder has decided to obsess upon for the rest of the movie and the very issue that Batman uses to push his anti-Supes agenda. By the time you discover that other players were involved in the attack you barely have enough energy left to shrug your shoulders.

The other threads are tangled into a series of barely connected sequences meant to introduce Jesse Eisenberg’s very Jesse Eisenberg take on the calm, stoic Lex Luthor, who babbles on like a Comic Con attendee on Red Bull and Ritalin. Much time is spent with between this charmless character and Bruce Wayne, who is busy having multiple dream sequences, flashbacks, flash-forwards (maybe?) and hallucinations. All of these moments seem to want to replace Marvel’s infamous end-credit tags, hoping desperately to salivate a DC fan for future movie installments.  Instead, these moments leave the audience to audibly ask what they just saw and disrupt an already poorly constructed, convoluted plot.

-and what of Superman? The movie spends less time with Clark’s alter-ago, who desperately needs some good writing and strong screen time, than any of the other main characters. Any time comic books or DC is discussed, some genius always wants to announce their unique and special proclamation that “Superman sucks”, “Superman is boring”, “I hate Superman”. This movie doesn’t even bother to help change any minds. While Grant Morrison and Frank Miller have produced powerful and intriguing depictions of the Kryptonion kid on paper, Goyer and Terrio fail to make him any more than a high school kid who would rather pout in his locker and listen to Linkin Park than someone who we’d want to cheer and root for. By the time his climactic ending occurs, you will struggle to care.

It’s not without it’s moments. The performers are giving everything they can to make the movie work. Amy Adams brings humanity, Jeremy Irons is a quick wit as Alfred, Affleck is a shockingly functional Bruce Wayne and Gal Gadot is a kick-ass, battle-hungry Wonder Woman. The fight scenes, though few and far between, are delicious candy. Choreography is tight, you feel every super-powered punch and the “shaky cam” found in most movies like this is absent. You’ll chomp through these action tidbits all too quickly and wish you had more. The Batman warehouse scene alone proves that we need a Ben Affleck Batman movie…but maybe he needs to be the one in the director chair this time around.

Maybe it’s unfair to blame Synder. With the very forced Justice League cameos and easter eggs, there is a very corporate sense that Warner is desperately trying to catch up with 8 years of Marvel movies within 2+ hours. Though it took Marvel several films to give us that glorious shot of the fully assembled team, it was earned and we can at least look back on 2008’s Iron Man as a legitimately great comic book movie. Batman v. Superman’s money shot was not earned. It was manufactured and vacuum-sealed overnight.

Sorry DC fans. Maybe next time they’ll get it right.

First look at Spider-man in the new Civil War trailer!!

Here he is, the official Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-man, in all his glory!

Played by newcomer Tom Holland, this new Spider-man makes his first appearance in the new Captain America: Civil War thanks to a new agreement with Sony Pictures that lets them retain solo-movie rights while still allowing the character to appear in the Avengers universe.

Here’s what the new Ducktales series will look like!

Disney just dropped this beauty on Twitter earlier today.

Last year I reported that Disney had announced an all-new Ducktales animated series wherein they expected the full voice cast of the 1980’s original to make a return.  Things have remained quiet until earlier today when Disney released the first official still of the upcoming series on Twitter.  Unlike the original cel-animated “Disney Afternoon” series, this rendition seems to be aiming for more of a hand-drawn look that recalls the 1950’s comics by Carl Banks.

Ducktales is still scheduled for a 2017 premiere but if you want to whet your appetite, take a look at some of the new Mickey Mouse cartoons by Paul Ruddish (Dexter’s Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls).  They merge a classic Disney feel with the wit and insanity of the modern Cartoon Network fare (think Adventure Time meets Disney).  Some of the shorts include appearances by Goofy, Donald and Ducktales own Scrooge McDuck, who is still voiced by 97 year-old Alan Young!!

Season 1 of the new Mickey Mouse cartoon is only $7.50 on Amazon Prime!

Grab the first season of Ducktales for less than $10!

The original 1980’s Ninja Turtles are back in this new special!!

Nickelodeon’s surprisingly effective modern incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will return to the past in “Transdimentional Turtles”, a new special airing on the kid’s network later this month.

Voice actors of the current series Seth Green (Leonardo), Sean Astin (Raphael), Greg Cipes (Michelangelo) and will be sharing screen time with the voice actors of the wildly successful 80’s cartoon.  Unlike the previous crossover special, the original cast will all be present this time including Cam Clarke (Leonardo), Barry Gordon (Donatello), Townsend Coleman (Michelangelo) and Rob Paulsen as both classic Raphael and modern Donatello.

If you think the 80’s turtles look bizarre in the modern CG style, take a look at the footage below (courtesy of IGN).  …they almost look like Disney World mascots with animatronic heads.

The episode is scheduled to air on Sunday, March 27th at 11am ET/PT.

Season 1 DVD of the new Ninja Turtles is only $24.99 on Amazon Prime

LEAK: Ryu from Street Fighter; Fire Emblem’s Roy coming to Smash Bros.

It sounded pretty crazy at first but it’s looking more and more likely to be true-

Street Fighter character Ryu may be an upcoming DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. 3DS.  With all the excitement of Mewtwo, Lucas and the new fighter ballot, people have begun to dig through and decrypt today’s new Smash Bros. update.

Redditor shinyquagsire23 uncovered some major revelations:

Ok, so I just got the latest update decrypted, and I think I have some news which might be rather interesting.

First things first, new sounds. In /romfs/sound/bgm we have a slew of new sounds (and some old ones from prior updates since each update overwrites the other). The list is:

  • snd_bgm_F27_AIR_MoriStage_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_H12_BW_Sentou_Zekrom_Reshiram_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_SF01_SF2_Ryu_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_T09_SDX_PupupuLand_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_V01_PAC_PacMan_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_Z80_F_Mewtwo_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_Z81_F_Ryu_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_Z82_F_Lucas_3DS.nus3bank
  • snd_bgm_Z83_F_Roy_3DS.nus3bank

Now obviously the biggest sticklers are Ryu, Mewtwo, Roy, and Lucas. Not sure who Ryu is (although if anyone does know, please tell),. However, Roy most intrigued me. Did they update the koopa kid’s sound for some reason? Or is there more?

So I converted the 4 sounds which most stuck out to me:

Most of these are victory screens, all but the first Ryu sound file which seems to be a new stage. Now here’s the kicker: Roy’s victory theme is the Fire Emblem victory theme.

Yes, we’re getting Roy back guys!

I’ll continue exploring around if I can, it’s a bit late here unfortunately and I might not be back for a while though.

EDIT: I just looked into it, apparently Ryu is from Street Fighter

EDIT 2: Went ahead and ran a file listing on every updated file (although, granted, this also includes every update from before 1.06), txt file is here. Nothing too special, wouldn’t run to any conclusions from just a file list.

EDIT 3: Just to clarify, this is from a 3DS decryption, not Wii U. No idea what’s in the Wii U files, and I don’t have a Wii U to verify that.

EDIT 4: As some people pointed out, these could also be scrap files, no guarantees on anything yet. Really interesting though.

Edit 5: RIP Dropbox links. Might have to find another place to throw them.

OK, so it seems this whole thing exploded while I was away. Did some more investigating and got the rest of the audio files converted. One of them looks to be N64 Dreamland, an updated Pac-Man and Pokemon stage song, Ryu’s stage, a stage I’m not sure what it is (MoriStage_3DS), and then the 3 victory themes. Since Dropbox died last time, I zipped all the audio files into a MEGA download here. Also, just another note, but the thing I just realized is that in my 1.05 decryption the sounds folder was nonexistant, so all these sounds are new in one way or another.

EDIT: OK, so I’ve identified with the help of some of the other scene people some of the other songs which should match up with each file:

Interestingly enough, we have two kirby songs in here. New stage perhaps?

Yup, those are definitely the two songs used in the Dreamland stage on Super Smash Bros. for N64.  It sounds like we’re getting some DLC stages pretty soon.

So not only is Ryu likely to be the next playable third party Smash Bros. character and we’re getting new stages, but signs are also pointing to the return of Fire Emblem’s Roy.  Roy’s last Smash appearance was also his first- in GameCube’s Super Smash Bros. Melee.  It would be pretty exciting to have him come back.

Crediar on twitter, who previously leaked Tingle as a playable character in Hyrule Warriors, also verifies these files.

For further confirmation, Ryu’s Smash Bros music and several other themes have been uploaded here.

It looks like Nintendo is planning to keep the Smash Bros. machine alive for a long time.  Thank god.

PS – here’s the best rendition of Ryu’s theme you’ll ever experience.

…and we’re back!

After a long absence of illness, doctor’s appointments, job interviews and traveling, I am finally back.  I honestly wasn’t expecting such a delay but perhaps I need to bring in some additional bloggers.

I also missed a lot of awesome posting opportunities.  The X-Files is coming back, Nintendo is letting fans pick the next Smash Bros. character, a new Muppet show is being planned and Kendrick Lamar released an incredible album.

I definitely have a lot to make up for so bare with me.  In the meantime enjoy this Chance the Rapper song because we back, we back, we back and we back and we back!!

It’s Official: Spider-man is joining the Marvel Cinemaverse

UPDATE: It’s Confirmed!!

Original post:

According to Latino Review[RUMOR] , SONY is allowing Spider-man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. People often suggest taking Latino Review’s reports with a grain of salt but they’ve had a decent track record with respect to the MCU, accurately reporting on much of Phase 3.

With this recent report, it looks like Spidey will be making his grand appearance in the third Avengers film, currently being split into Infinity War Part I and Infinity War Part II. The story line will see some pretty bleak changes for the Avengers. Keep in mind that this movie will follow Captain America: Civil War and be warned, these are spoilers:

[mks_highlight color=”#000000″]
Thor is missing in action, imprisoned somehwere. Steve Rogers is dead. Chris Evans will not be in this movie. It makes sense when you see that Evans is only signed on for two more movies, and would leave room for Bucky to take up the sheild just as he did in the comics. Anyway, this prompts Spider-man to swing into action and join the fight.[/mks_highlight]

Again, it still might not be true but if it is, this is pretty exciting stuff.

Here’s What Game Of Thrones’ Maisie Williams Said On Reddit!

Maisie Williams at HBO's "Game Of Thrones" Season 3 Seattle Prem

Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, known for playing the vengeful Arya Stark, just wrapped up a Reddit AMA only moments ago.  She was funny and very forthcoming with her answers.  Here some of what she had to say:

On making up lyrics to a song she hasn’t memorized

All the time. I thought Taylor Swift’s new song said “Something-something-Starbucks-lovers” when it actually said “I’ve got a long list of ex-lovers” and that was news to me. And I realized I’d been embarrassing myself for like 2 months!

On video games

Me and my brothers enjoy playing a computer game called “Amnesia” which is really scary!

On difficult scenes to film for Game Of Thrones

There’s actually a scene in the coming season… which was my most difficult scene to film. And I think fans are going to be really excited about it. More emotional than we’ve seen Arya in previous seasons.

On the moment she realized the popularity of Game Of Thrones

Season 3. At the season 3 premiere, we went to the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, and stepping out of the car, with hundreds of people screaming my name, is when I realized that this show completely changed my life. It was very, very daunting – I found it quite scary – but it happened gradually, so I had time to get used to it.

On the things that annoy her

Patronizing adults, saying “back in my day, blahblahblah” because I’m sure they found it annoying in their day when adults said back in MY day – I don’t know what it was like in your day, I was only born 17 years ago, so stop being patronizing about it!

On which actor’s personality most resembles their GoT character

Rory (McCann) is quite similar to The Hound before breakfast, in that, if he hasn’t eaten, he’s kind of grumpy! haha! But I love ‘im regardless.

On what she would do if she took the iron throne

Ehm… oooh, if I was the queen of Westeros, the first rule… I would make everyone a Wildling, because I think their costumes are really cool!

It’s probably the most shallow answer ever, but it’s true.

On her favorite guilty pleasure movie

Oh! JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE. It’s like, about 3 girls that fancy this one guy, and it’s so cheesy, but I can’t stop watching it, ever.

On dancing, and her favorite type of dance

I like jazz, because it doesn’t matter what shape or size or length your legs are, you can use this dance to benefit you. Yeah. It’s good for all shapes and sizes, I guess.  You can modify it to benefit your body type.
