Nintendo Just Announced a New Nintendo 3DS

It’s the NEW Nintendo 3DS everyone!

Yup, Nintendo just announced the new system- which is the same system, but with a new name and new casing. That’s it.

…not really though.

The New Nintendo 3DS has more buttons, a second analog stick and is far more powerful than it’s predecessor, allowing it to play games like Xenoblade Chronicles:

Take a look at the announcement trailer for Xenoblade 3DS here.

It’s unknown what other, more powerful games are planned for the freshly upgraded handheld. There is plenty of room for speculation considering all the improvements and changes made to the system, however.

Pokémon Fighting Game Revealed. Tekken-style. Yup.

screenShot03

A Pokémon fighting game has been long rumored and anticipated ever since that single screenshot of Lucario in a fighting-style arena leaked nearly a year ago. No one expected this however.

Pokkén Tournament, developed by Namco-Bandai, is essentially a Pokémon fighting game running on the Tekken game engine. The game was announced this morning along with new screenshots and video footage.

Pokkén Tournament will initially release as an arcade cabinet in Japan next year, but expect an overseas console version to follow soon after.

Because Pokémon.

Check out the announcement trailer and the official website.

Duck Hunt Dog, Shulk, Baby Bowser join Smash Bros.!

UPDATE 08/25/2014:

Ready for the insanity?

You sure?

Ok. Here we go.

Don’t take this as fact yet but in what appears to be a legitimate leak, we now know the full character roster for Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo 3DS and Wii-U. Prepare yourself for the happy, the sad and the WTF…

21422

Looks like the leaks are real. Videos were leaked revealing what appears to be the new leaked characters brawling out, including Baby Bowser in his clown car. Nintendo had the videos taken down but we have some animated gifs, ableit blurry ones:

Here’s what we’re hearing so far:

  • Snake, Lucas, Wolf and Ice Climbers are gone. It sucks but we pretty much knew Snake was out of the picture but Wolf? Lucas? ICE CLIMBERS? Those are going to hurt.
  • The dog from Duck Hunt is a playable character. Yes, that dog. …and the ducks hover around him for special attacks because why not. Why the fuck not.
  • Shulk from Xenoblade (!) is officially a playable character.
  • Shulk also has five different fighting styles (like Hwoarang?)
  • Bowser Jr. is playable, purportedly riding around in the Clown Car from NSMB
  • We’re also being told that the Koopalings are alt-costumes for Bowser Jr. One can only hope.
  • Each character will have 8 alternate costumes.
  • Dr. Mario is back as a clone.
  • Dark Pit is a clone.
  • Alph is an Olimar clone.
  • One leaker is suggesting that Dixie, Mewtwo, Ridley, Mach Rider, and Impa are also unlockable.
  • Another leaker is claiming that Chorus Men (Rhythm Heaven), Wolf, Lucas and Snake are DLC characters.
  • Several leakers claiming that this isn’t the complete character roster, though as you can see above, there is dispute over which characters still remain.

Take a look at the leaked images, plenty of details in here that I haven’t mentioned yet (All-Star, Single Player, etc).

…about that controversial “Smash Bros.” Samus outfit

zlCfzSVRj_E2kR2YM0

Gaming forums were abuzz earlier today when a new Samus costume was revealed for the hotly anticipated Super Smash Bros.  sequel on Nintendo Wii U and the 3DS.

Series mastermind Masahiro Sakurai has been extremely interactive and dedicated to the fan-base, answering questions and posting at least one new image-per-day on the Smash Bros. Miiverse page. This morning Sakurai once again took to the internet to show off a new image from Smash Bros, this time presenting one of Metroid-heroine Samus Aran’s many alternate costumes.

zlCfzSVRkUwzW2CtrQ

In the image captain, Sakurai posted this:

Pic of the day. Looking at the number of days we have left for development, it would be an impossible task to create this… That’s what I told my staff. But thanks to the determination of her female designer, these Zero Suit outfits got completed in time. From the ending of Metroid: Zero Mission, here’s Samus in shorts!

You see that? Isn’t that cute? It’s like Sakurai is waving away the inevitable outrage this was going to cause with a “no, it’s cool guys, a woman designed this”.

I’m not a huge fan of the forced-sexualization of strong female characters in fiction, take for example for what Alien Resurrection did to Ripley or what perverted fans on the internet do to Mikasa from Attack on Titan.  One of the things I’ve always respected about the Metroid saga is that Samus is just as strong, fierce and intelligent as any male gaming hero out there. She is not objectified by the other characters for being a woman. She is a soldier, a warrior and a scientist.

This was pretty rare for a video game series when the first Metroid game pulled back the curtain in 1986 to reveal that the person in the badass robo-gear we were icing aliens with was :gasp: A WOMAN!

metroid02b

Which brings us back to the “sexy” Smash Bros. costume- Why is this considered sexy? Because we can see her stomach? Are we automatically sexualizing someone because they are wearing something that could essentially be gym clothes? There are obviously larger social issues that can be explored here, most of which I am not mentally equipped to be an authority on.  I’m just having a hard time seeing the images above in any kind of sexual light. I see Samus. Mother Brain-crushing, planet exploring, pirate-fightin’ Samus.

…but maybe it’s just me.  Or maybe it’s the fact that we’ve seen this outfit before. Twice. Not only from Metroid Zero Mission as Sakurai suggested, but from Metroid Fusion as well.

I think this more about “we need more of Samus Aran’s costumes to be available in this game” than it is “we need something sexy in Smash Bros!”.

I hope I’m wrong.

samus
…I might be off base about that Fusion picture on the left though…

What do you think?

Is this simply “another alternate costume” for Samus?
Or should we be feeling outrage and disgust?

Listen To This: RX Bandits – Meow! Meow! Space Tiger

rbn-rxb-W540
Pictured above: One of the best live acts you’ll ever see.

After being on hiatus since 2011, RX Bandits finally reunited just in time to wash out the taste left by Magic’s Police cover songPolice tribute song completely original song “Rude”. If you want something with a little bit of a reggae flavor, you can do a lot worse than RX Bandits. Taking some surprising twists and turns throughout their career, the upbeat progressive-ska rock band has continued to defy expectations, even after taking a three year hiatus.

The band’s comeback album Gemini, Her Majesty was only released on July 22nd but it already feels right at home alongside The Resignation and …And The Battle Begun. Vocalist/guitarist Matt Embree sounds as on point as ever, drifting over riffs from Steve Choi that range from bouncy ska to darkly atmospheric.

It’s as if they never left.

The one song that never leaves my head is the bizarrely titled “Meow! Meow! Space Tiger”. Perhaps it was a demo name, a placeholder that they decided the stick with…it doesn’t matter. The song has kick.  Choi and Embry again unity to create some funky sounds just before pouring into an insanely infectious, upbeat reggae hook.  It has the perfect balance of old-school ska RX and their newer, spacier sounds.  Gemini, Her Majesty deserves love and recognition as a full, cohesive album but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that this song wasn’t my ticket to take that ride.

Some other songs worth checking out: Stargazer, Will You Be Tomorrow.

Honestly though, the whole album is great.

Why Won’t FOX Release Those ‘X-Files’ Blu-Rays?

Untitled

Fans have been waiting for nearly a full decade for word on a Blu-Ray release of The X-Files. In 2008, when it was revealed that the two films would get a Blu-Ray release, producer Frank Spotnitz reported that Fox had no plans to release the series in HD format. In 2012 the rumors started popping yet again, with a hopes of a Blu-Ray release in 2013. It didn’t happen.

Oddly enough, Germany has been re-airing the full series in 1080p.  That’s right, somewhere out there Fox is sitting on an HD remaster of the entire series, including a full wide-screen makeover for the earlier seasons that lacked it. Why is Fox only airing this in Germany? Why not release the Blu-Ray set or at least air the damn thing in the United States?

One theory is that Fox is waiting to see how the proposed X-Files sequel/reboot situation plays out. Earlier this month, series creator Chris Carter described the new heads at Fox to be “friends of” Mulder and Scully, confirming that there have been conversations. Hopefully we get a sequel of some sorts instead of a reboot. The final season, while boasting some great “monster of the week” episodes and the excellent Agent Doggett (Robert Patrick), was more or less a failed attempt at rebooting the series without Duchovny’s Mulder…and when Duchovny did come back for the series finale we were left with a massive cliffhanger that wasn’t even addressed in the second movie.

So what’s it gonna be Fox? Whether we get an X-Files reboot or an X-Files sequel, it’s high time the fans were treated to a clean, HD release of the legendary series.

Take a look at these screenshots and try not to get angry.

Watch this absolutely PERFECT Robin Williams tribute.

rwwww

It’s been a rough week. We lost one of the most beloved, gentle, kind and inspiring actor-comedians of the past generation. …and while I’ve been distracted by some of the other horrors of the past week (Ferguson, Gaza), there’s a unique bittersweet feeling that I get when my mind returns to the loss of Robin Williams.

Mr. Williams was such an important figure in my life growing up. He made me laugh in Aladdin, he taught me about divorce in Mrs. Doubtfire, he captured my imagination in Hook and touched my heart in Good Will Hunting. As someone who struggles with depression, it was always a small source of comfort to look to him as a beacon of hope. A childhood hero who was still fighting a very real, personal battle, a battle that I understood. He was encouraging us to do the same, telling us that it was a battle worth fighting.  It hurts to know that he lost his battle. With the pain of his passing, he is still bringing the seriousness of depression to light, hopefully encouraging people not only to get support, but to be supportive to others as well.

Keeping that in mind, take a minute out of your day to watch this beautiful, heart-warming tribute to Mr. Robin Williams:

Cowboy Bebop Finally Getting Blu-Ray Release In U.S.

Often cited as the greatest anime of all time,  Cowboy Bebop introduced a generation of young adults to anime over a decade ago. I like to think that it finished what Akira started, proving to the United States that anime was a medium to be respected, not just “cartoons for kids”.

4481_4

With an assortment of exciting and engaging stories, intriguing and fun characters, beautiful animation, a stunning jazz soundtrack and a legendary ending that left audiences breathless, the series quickly reached “classic” status, pushing director Shinchiro Wantanabe to direct other beloved series like Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope and Space Dandy, even inspiring medium beyond Japan (ahem…FIREFLY). Cowboy Bebop enjoyed high ratings on Adult Swim and Toonami thanks to Cartoon Network frequently bringing the series back due to audience demand, despite the series only having 26-episodes. In fact, this just happened AGAIN though the network admits the episodes are not in HD. Ok fine, we’ll just buy them on…oh wait. Though Cowboy Bebop: The Movie got a Blu-Ray release, the only official releases of the series have been in VHS and DVD form (in virtually the same quality). Last year Japan and Europe enjoyed a Blu-Ray release but there hasn’t been any word on a US release until now. Yes, Cowboy Bebop is finally coming to blu-ray and fully remastered too!

Before you get scared about the quality being ruined by softened outlines, cropping and darker colors, take a look at the comparison below. comparison1 Looks great right?

Fans will have four options for purchase:
